Time for practice

At the beginning of the year I took some time to look over the work I had done and evaluate how I felt about it after the fact. One of the things I love about painting, but something that can also be a hinder is the endless possibilities and the ability to learn something new about it every day. What I gathered from the last year is that I am extremely indecisive and need to learn to make decisions before putting paint down not while I'm doing it. Not being clear and precise leads to guessing or just winging it! Although in there completed form I really love and am proud of many of the works I did, it's also apparent where my weaknesses are.

That being said, for most of this month I've been working on scrap linen, around 8x10 in size. Instead of the daunting blank canvas it's much easier to just tape it up, set a timer, and learn something new or practice something old. I'm going to keep this practice going and occasionally post some of the ones I like enough to finish up by mounting to hardboard. As with these two, I'll also be listing them for sale via my Etsy page.

It seems like many I've fallen behind due to the holidays and am just getting some time back in the studio to catch up with what is already turning out to be a very fast paced new year. The first thing I did before jumping back into painting was making it a point to CLEAN my studio area which in and of itself really helps to keep creative flowing. (i.e. not having to stop and look for 20 minutes to find the missing tube of cad yellow!)

On a side note, does anyone else notice how difficult it is to post with blogger lately?

Portrait Commission

This was a portrait commission I did for a wonderful woman that found me via Etsy. Although it won't be gifted till after the holidays I got permission to post it now. (So you can see I have been working!) Sometimes when people send you photos you get very little information from the snapshots but I had great hi resolution photos in this case making it alot of fun to work from. The detail below shows the texture of the paint. Since I had the room to work with I used my knives on a majority of the face. Such a great face to capture!

Although this one above was done 2nd I rearranged the (very creative and original) titles with the one below because of the third pair hiding in the background. I didn't really notice it until I went to post them. These little still life paintings are a great exercise for me to try something new or just to warm up before doing something larger.

This one is by far my favorite and was the last one I did, and last minute too. Framed it right before leaving for the show. When I get it back I'll have to take a close up of the thick paint. I'm rather proud of the amount I used without "muddying" it up.

One thing I've started experimenting with is paint application. Here I used a palette knife to load the paint onto the surface and then moved it around with a bristle brush.

Although the title isn't very original this was a very fun painting to work on. Most of it was painted with a palette knife so the paint is rather thick which I've learned makes it twice as hard to photograph! I'll have to try again and see if I can get a little less glare. It's been awhile since I've used my palette knives but once I got this little one done I worked on an two larger ones in the same technique. I'll be posting those soon..

Out of the studio

Since my last post two weeks ago I haven't been able to spend much time in the studio, but have instead been volunteering my time cleaning up what the flood left behind. It really is unbelievable how much a little water can destroy in such a little bit of time.

Houses which withstood all previous situations now being stripped down to the bones to rid the damaged pieces. As much as I would like to be painting it's impossible to ignore the help needed in the less fortunate communities. The only art related thing I've done is open some frames I had ordered for my show, which is now a little over a month away!

Will be back to painting and filling those frames soon!

Northeastern Pa Flood

   This seems to be a month of natural disasters for the east coast. From an earthquake, hurricane, and now a flood. Currently we are in a state of emergency here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Susquehanna River, which runs along the majority of the state coming all the way from New York and into Maryland, is at max capacity and in many places has already overflowed and engulfed many towns with overwhelming flood waters.
    My hometown and the ones nearby have exceeded flood levels by many feet and almost all areas are at record highs. Thousands have been evacuated and because risk is far from over those fortunate enough to still have homes will not be able to return to them until Sunday or Monday. In total 42 Pennsylvania counties have been determined to be a federal disaster. That's 60% of the state.The national guard was brought in and have been blocking off damaged roads, patrolling evacuated areas to deter looting and assisting in any way they can.
   There is a levee system protecting those along the river including our city of Wilkes Barre by holding back flood water. In 1972 the area was inundated by flood waters from hurricane Agnes and that catastrophic event prompted the building of the levees. At this point we are well above the water levels recorded then and there is so much speculation about the integrity of the system which, if it fails will devastate thousands more. My own residence is only two streets from the river and the levee in question so all prayers are on the strength of these walls. I've collected some photos from various sources to give a spectrum of what we're dealing with.

Prelude to Fall

Finished up this still life over the hurricane weekend. Fortunately, we didn't lose power or have any major damage as some did from the storm. Some in the area are just getting there power back on now ( 6 days later..) but I believe there are still some without!

The title for this was picked as I spent more of the day outdoors and realized that sadly the summer is over and the trees are already showing signs of color change. It will most likely be a very quick and rushed autumn season just like spring was almost non existent this year.

Since most of my sales are online I don't usually work larger then 12x16 to avoid the hassle of having to ship them. Now that I have an excuse I've prepared a few larger surfaces to work on and look forward to using them.

This is a new piece I recently completed that will be part of my upcoming show in November. The details are still being worked out but as they are decided I'll be sure to update. All in all today started out like any other day.

I made my coffee, went to the studio, and spent the morning finishing up this painting. Just as I was putting in one of the last brushstrokes the earthquake hit and for a second...I thought I had to much coffee.

Within a few minutes of being on Facebook (CNN was in the background...) I realized it wasn't just me! After the news feeds died down I went to check my e-mail and saw that I had sold two paintings via my Etsy shop. If that wasn't exciting enough, another one sold a few minutes after that! As an artist, this phenomenon greatly outweighs any natural catastrophe that may occur. Although I don't hope for anymore earthquakes, a few more sales would be nice!

Vacation and Group Effort

I'm back in the studio, revived and ready to get back to work. Four days away feels like a month to me, especially since I didn't get time to paint at all. (Not even a simple sketch!) However, I've spent the last hour going through the hundreds of photos (497 to be exact) I took and will be able to use for reference. There are many from the beach I know I'll be clinging to when winter arrives..

Although I didn't complete any paintings while away there is one sitting in my studio that hasn't been posted. It was completed awhile ago but it seems I never got around to sticking it up here. It's a scene that I have painted before but felt compelled to go back and re visit it the composition. The older version can be seen here. This time around I opted for a higher contrast attempt, toning down some of the colors and playing up the foreground a bit more.

Crossing Main and Day at the Park

I have two paintings I've been working on at the same time. Although they are two very different scenes (and have two completely different palettes) it keeps me from burning out to switch between them. I do this when I am working on a larger painting that can't be completed in a single session. After staring at it for an extended period of time one of two things happens. Either I become entranced in the abstract shapes and colors and can continue on hour after magical hour without much thought to the process or, as usually happens it becomes a blob of visual vomit that I aimlessly throw paint at until it is overworked or turned to mud. Just may way of avoiding the obvious ruts and using what I know works for me.

Plein Air Practice

Friday I went out for a little plein air practice, and decided to paint at the creek behind my parents house since I havn't been back since last year. One of these days I'll venture somewhere a little more exploratory but it's so convenient (and private) that I can't help but return.

Above is the "road" leading down to the creek at the base of the mountain.

A view of what I was working with, although I condensed alot to add to the composition. I was painting on a 10x14 stretched canvas and after doing a few sketches couldn't decide whether the vertical or horizontal format was better but I decided I wanted a little of the overcast sky reflected in the water so decided on vertical.

After about 2.5 hours of having an overcast sky it kept going between sun and light rain so I decided to head back and finish the rest up later on in the studio. I actually had no idea what this looked like till I stepped back to photograph it. I tend to zone out and concentrate on the abstract shapes. All in all it was a very peaceful day of painting, and really has got me wanting to get in some more!

Over the weekend I started working on this 14x18 street scene, and although it's far from complete I thought I would post it in the current state. Also, I made some new 11x14 linen panels and a couple 16x20s. For some reason I've been compelled to work larger lately which means I'll need a bit more space to store these works while they are drying. Today ended up being a marketing Monday instead of a painting one but I forgot to post this so at least I have something to show. Instead of being able to finish up the landscape/bridge painting as I had hoped, I spent a total of 9 hours doing some long overdue updating of tags, photos, and links on my blog, etsy shop, daily paintworks, facebook, google docs, ect. Just like any other thing if you stop paying attention to it starts to gather dust and become irrelevant. Lets hope the work pays off and boosts some traffic!

A small still life featuring the same tomato as the other day in the 5x5. The second group of tomatoes is ready now, and it looks like a few more are sprouting. As exciting as it is to grow your own vegetables, I don't actually eat tomatoes so next year I'll have to plant something I actually like.

Currently I have two paintings I'm working on that are a little larger. One is an 11x14 of my nephew in the park, and the other is a 12x16 bridge/landscape painting. Hopefully will have them both completed by this weekend so next week (when the heat wave is over) I'll be free to do some plein air!

Just to check colors and values under natural daylight (even though my studio lights mimic this) I took it outside and snapped a picture. The only thing I didn't like at this point was the competing pinks in the little girls bathing suit and the woman in the background. I changed it to a dull yellow instead.

Ricketts Glen visit and work in progress

An 11x14 I've been working on since yesterday, and interruptions excluded will finish sometime tomorrow. The reference came from some photos I took while at a lake beach at nearby Ricketts Glen State Park. Originally the plan was to paint on location but only my sketchbook and camera made it into the car. Worked out better anyway as the wind was extremely strong on top the mountain and would have been impossible to work in! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I've taken quite a few photos while working on this so when it's complete I'll be sure to post them along with the finished work. Check back soon!

Finally, after weeks of waiting my upside down topsy-turvy tomato plant grower thing.....grew A tomato. It's closer in size to a cherry tomato but it's actually supposed to be bigger. It first started out as a little weed looking thing that I was sure would die and be thrown out like most plants I try to keep. However, within a week or so it started sprouting leaves and stalks and offshoots all over. Then the actual tomatoes started popping out in groups, one after another. There were initially five "bunches" that were growing but this is the only one that survived from it's bunch. Hopefully the next group will be more successful!

This is also a double victory for me as I not only grew the subject for the painting, but I also made the panel it's painted on. I used Claessens #15 linen which to me is extremely smooth and took a little getting used to. I mounted the linen onto ampersand gessoboard, using various sizes from 5x5 up to 16x20. I'm not usually a big fan of working small so I was surprised how fun it was to paint this. Hopefully there will be more in the near future since I now have a stockpile of panels ready it would be a good time to work on my prolificness.

This is a commission I did for a previous collector, who originally I had done this painting for. Over the years since that first painting she has acquired several other paintings of mine as well. This time it was her daughter who asked to have this moment captured of her Mother and Grandmother enjoying the summer together. It was to be given to her as a gift in memory of her own Mother who has passed away. This was such a great opportunity to get to work on something specifically for her, and without her knowing!

I'm fairly happy with how this relatively colorless subject turned out. It was an experiment of sorts in the use of greys and whites. I've only recently realized the many combinations of colors you can use to get a grey tone. It's been many many years since I've used the black + white technique but, I hadn't advanced much further, mostly being consistent with the blue+brown+white combo instead. Now there's all sorts of grey mixtures I use that include just about every color on my palette.

I took the photo for this in a restaurant awhile ago on my cell phone and completely forgot about it. I had to do an update and in the process I move all my photos to a folder on my computer so nothing gets lost and so my phone doesn't get swamped with useless photos. Most of them are spur of the moment ones that I'll never use but occasional they have appeal even months later. Such is the case here, where I used it for a warm up sketch.

One last tribute to the now decayed tangerines. In total three tangerines provided 5 different paintings, and many many photos. I couldn't stop using them, as the longer they sat the more ripe and colorful they got. I promise to move on to another object now, maybe a series of pears?!? Here is the finished and enlarged version of "Locked Out." It was originally done on a 9x12 canvas panel, while this one is slightly larger at 11x14 and is on stretched canvas. It was a fairly interesting process to do the same subject twice. There are more tangerine paintings to come, and that will be it! (for awhile at least)

It's always more exciting to start something new than it is to work on something you've let for awhile, but I gave it a few hours anyway and now it's done. That is the top of my easel you see, I haven't been able to get outside to photograph it yet due to the snow.

This is the progress I made today with the enlargement of "Locked Out" from a 9x12 panel to an 11x14 stretched canvas. I like the direction it's heading in although there is alot left to work out. Even though this new piece is slightly more "completed" then it's original contender, I love everything about the first study and how it came together. Just for fun here is a shot of my easel while in progress. (Notice the heater under the easel..there's another one hanging on the ceiling...and a dehumidifier to keep out dampness. Did I mention I paint in a basement?)

This is my favorite painting of the new year so far. So much so, that I'm currently converting it to a slightly larger format. Tangerines in general get my attention, especially when laid up next to this green/turquoise bell jar. Although I ate one of these three, the other two are still on stage for some photos I plan to use later.

These three onions were sitting in the window sill of the kitchen for a few days. Everytime I saw them I knew they had to be painted but didn't know how to go about setting them up. By the time the large one "sprouted" the greenery I had decided on using this bottle and knife. The clear glass and reflective steel where alot of fun. It appears to me that the onions are hiding behind the bottle, avoiding a run in with the knife!

I heard on the news this morning that the only state in the US that has NOT had snow so far is Florida. I didn't think I'd ever say it but.....I'm definitely wishing I was still there! Winter pushes me into the studio and reaching for photos that depict the warm sunny days I'm missing. I started a beach scene today with hopes it would make the cold stuff disappear....

At the end of the year, I decided to take some time and look through all the paintings I did. The good, the bad, and the ugly. From the finished and framed to the pile of scrapped ones waiting to be painted over. Going through them I made some notes on what I thought had been improved on over the year, and what still needed work. This gave me a guideline for things I'd like to do in the next three hundred and sixty five days. An automatic resolution of sorts that makes it much easier to just get painting and stop thinking so much about what I'm doing. Now it's just a matter of continuing the learning process.

Here are two more paintings I completed recently. After I finished the first one I had a mess of paint on my palette and instead of wasting it I decided to scoop it up and slap it on a recycled canvas. It was a pressure free way of trying something different. Today and tomorrow I'm hanging out in Washington DC, a great city place to visit that's full of art and life.

I have a bad habit of spending a decent amount of time trying to get "inspired." Flipping through photos or setting up still lives, only to decide the weather looks decent enough to be outside doing some plein air, and then turning to something else completely. Yesterday, after a few hours of this routine I decided I had wasted way to much time. I pulled this recent photo taken on my phone and decided to just give it an hour. An hour later (and five mintues this morning) this is what I got. Sometimes its best just to paint without putting so much thought into it.

Even though I've only painted a few, recently I've been compelled to do more portraits. There's something fun about puzzeling them together. This was from a couple of photo's I had on my computer of my cousin who I've painted before. Photographing the actual painting was hard for some reason, with all the skin tones competing with the blue background. Every single shot was either too blue or too red/yellow/pink etc. Either way actually painting it was alot of fun!

This is a a quarter turned view from the painting I did recently of the parking lot. There's something about the mix of greens and greys in an urban setting that draws my attention. Now that the extreme humidity has gone away, it's a little easier to be outside. Which is exactly where I'll be today!

Another urban scene from a recent visit to Phildadelphia. The photos I took while I was in the city were mostly colorless and grey due to the overcast day. Even from a distance this blue awning popped out of the otherwise drab surroundings.

Front Yard

This is my plein air attempt yesterday, a view from my front yard. Standing in the slight shade of the garage i was able to get this out just before heat stroke set in. It's only the second time this year I've been able to paint outdoors. Last summer I was out nearly everyday and pulled off quite a few interesting landscapes, yet this summer I can barely convince myself it's worth the effort. Not 100% sure why that is but I must say I enjoyed this and may possibly give it a try again soon if not just for fun.

This one was done primarily from sketchs and also a photo recorded on my cell phone. I think it makes a nice opposite to the blues and greens of the traditional landscape. After working in the shades and shadows of the country one I took the oppurtunity to push alot of the colors in this and kept it loose and open.

This is a comissioned portrait I recently finished and unfortuneately this is the only photo I have of it. This was a little before the finish though so it's a basic idea of the end result. It happens to be a friend of mine so it was alot of fun to do, and was very happy for her to receive it (as a birthday present) from her fiance. Aside from this I've been working rather steadily on some other smaller pieces in the studio and today actually braved the 110 temp to stand outside for a short amount of time and work on a simple 8x10 very close to the house. That I will post tomorrow.

Yesterday, I spent a few hours in Manhatten. Partly it was to be a business venture and the original plan was to get what I needed done, and spend the rest of the day wandering around the city gathering some reference material, possibily visiting a few galleries along the way.

That was a great plan until, once again, the temps jumped to triple digits and it was unbearable to even cross the street. A short stay inside Grand Central Station and few snaps of the camera in Time Sqaure later, it was time to get out of the heat. Although it ended up not being the photo op I had hoped for there was a nice stop by the King Tut exhibit and also a small pizza joint for two of the biggest slices of pizza I've ever seen! I was more then happy to be back in the car with the ac blasting by mid afternoon. Maybe another time..in another season..

Need to get a little better at updating here! Still staying very busy, even if your not seeing the progress. On my last post I was off to a new city to explore, and that I did. (Just a side note, Louisville is Bourbon territory! ) Right before I left for that vacation I found out my regular (daytime) job would be closing, so I've been unemployed since. Normally this would be bad news but I've taken it as an oppurtunity to take the summer and spend it in the studio.

So far it's been a blessing and a curse. I've realized that when you spend hours away from the easel on a regular basis your mind keeps thinking in that creative aspect, waiting to get back to your work and continuously thinking about what to do next. When your in front of the easel 15 hours a day your mind pretty much shuts down and doesn't care if you ever paint again. Maybe that's just me, but luckily I'm combating that by working on some commissions that are already decided on prior to beginning. That gives me the time to sit and think about my own work, which gets thrown in at the odd hours of the night after completing something else.

I liked this subject so much the first time I painted it for a commission that immediately after finishing it I did another. Second time was much easier as there was less to "figure out" and I could focus on other factors like edges, brush work, etc. This one IS available to purchase through my Etsy shop. The link is above in blue. Next up it's time for an updated portrait of my nephew Chase! Been itching to paint him again as he's obviously gotten much bigger and MUCH more animated. This is the finish to the still life of oranges, and that one peach hanging out in the bowl. The original photo image is from wetcanvas. I was scanning through the library there and when I saw it knew immediately I wanted to paint it. Actually, since this one is already purchased I may paint it again! I'll let it dry for the weekend and it will be sent off to accompany a larger peice for my friends new home.

On a side note I was finally free on a Wednesday night to make it by the broadcast Susan Carlin does on uStream. It was good to be able to chat with her and other "regulars" while she painted away, nailing down some perfecting touchs on a self portrait she's been working on. This is a work started a few months ago and left in the inbetween pile. The needs some work pile that hovers close to the throw it out pile. After working on a larger painting for most of the day I decided to pull it out and use the remaining paint on my palette to "attack" this one. Laying on thick paint freely really gave it the life I had envisioned in the first place when I approached this subject. Being slightly shy for whatever reason about taking peoples photos in public I remember trying to get a decent shot of this woman casually on my cell phone. After a few bad attempts I took what I had and made a few sketchs from memory. Now years later this is the result!

The prep work for this portrait took longer than the actual painting. It took a little over three days to get a get a good photo of this kitty named Clara, one in which she wasnt on the way out the door or diving behind furniture to avoid having her photo taken! Although I was only armed with the camera from my Blackberry (which I do not recommend for anything) it seemed she would hold still just long enough for the delay and than dissappear.

Today I'll be starting another pet portrait, this time of a Basenji named Bailey who comes complete with his own website AND facebook!

Today was the first day I actually got a chance to head out and enjoy painting in this great weather we've started having. A little shaky with a new setup and having been stuck in studio for the last five months, I didn't venture further than 100 feet from the back door, but it's steps taken nonetheless. It's fairly apparent I havn't painted out in quite awhile and in most cases this would have been wiped this down but I figured it's a good starting point to grow from. In this case I didn't want to bog myself down with mass capture of scene on first attempt so I kept it extremely loose.

I've got plenty of work in studio but I have a feeling there will be plenty of time, or time barrowed, to head out again this week. Maybe somewhere a little more exciting than my own backyard next time!

Today has been everything but a painting day. I was just getting into the studio this morning with enough time to print some packing slips before spending the next 3 hours on the phone for various reason. Following that I packed up and shipped a few paintings (internationally) and decided to do a couple listings in support of the Clinton Bush Haiti Relief Fund. There is no need to talk on this as we ALL know what's going on right now. Stop by this EBay auction page where I've listed 5 original paintings (auctions starting out at $30 each) that will give 70% of final sale price towards this amazing charity!

I barely managed to squeeze in an hour to finish this off and get it photographed under (decent) conditions. Now off for a late lunch and back to work on something new!

Sick Day

That's not the title of this painting, just the post. Today is a sick day for me. As of yesterday I started feeling rather ill and then on the way to work I started feeling REALLY ill. The worst(and probably most dangerous) thing I could think of would be to lose control of your stomach while driving... Somehow I was able to maintain composure enough to stop by, tell them I was NOT going to be working today and get back home before "losing it." I spent a few hours on the bathroom floor wondering odd things like, "who designed the duck wallpaper thats peeling off the walls?" or "how many strings does it take to make up the rug I'm laying on?"

Needless to say, I did not goto work again today. I decided to take the day to rest, but if you know me, you would know that only means doing something less strenuous. With a plastic bucket nearby and my brushes carefully placed out of distance from this area, I decided to work on this painting I've had sketched out since completing my previous posted one. It's been the best "rest day" I've ever had. Something about knowing I have no where else to be, and no other obligations I'd even consider fulfilling, lets your brain really go crazy and produce past normal busy minded potential. I've got a feeling I'll be finishing this up today, my stomach *gurgle* permitting.

Just a side note: I'm completely aware how badly taken these photos are, but I'm not interested in taking good photos right now, I'll do that come the end..

This is where I'm leaving it for the day. I could technically finish it, but there's a lot of paint and it just keeps getting pushed around and turning to mud. Tomororw, or more likely the next day I'll get back to it and put a complete finish on it. Not bad for a days work though! Now I'll start thinking of a title...

This is the finish to one of my favorite portraits I've ever done. Undoubtedly it will sit for a few days before I decide completely that I'm done working on it. Overall though, I wanted to keep this highlighted on the face and leave the rest to suggestion through brushwork. To say the least, I wasn't really into buying baby blankets and pacifiers, as registries look like foreign language to me. I thought this would make for a better gift that can't be outgrown or hopefully spit up on! After being varnished and framed I would like to put out a demand that this be placed over the crib where Chase sleeps.

The reason being growing up my eye was always drawn to art around me. My great Grandparents especially had a big influence in this that brought me to appreciate viewing all kinds of art from the great American painter Norman Rockwell to the favored photographer Ansel Adams. Later it was followed by my Grandparents who pushed me to create art, bending rules to get me into art classes much younger than my school allowed. The rest of my family has supported this entirely (i.e. my parents allowing me to turn their basement into an often messy, noisy, toxic smelling studio) and I'm hoping this will cause some small appreciation for my nephew, now the newest member of one of the best families I've ever known.

This year has started off at such a fast pace and I'm loving every minute of it. Worked another couple hours on this, mostly concentrating on the face. A few more to pull up to par the rest of the scene and I think it'll be a finish!

Right now I'm looking forward to the appeal of spring, when the snow will melt and the temperature will go back up to a degree I can tolerate. It will be a relief to get out of the studio and into the "open air." Truly I should be out right now braving the cold if I really wanted to be a hard painter..but the few attempts I've made have been brief and pointless. The thought of the cold makes my hands clench up to an uncontrollable degree. Plus I don't really consider myself a landscape painter. I just enjoy the experience of it all. Nonetheless, a few weeks from now there will be more greens and blues taking over these pages. Just a heads up...

Sometimes when my ADD kicks in I end up starting a few paintings at once and moving back and forth to curb my attention span's disorder. This is one of the such paintings, and I figured since I probably won't have anything solid to post right away I'd add a little update of this in process. The other which I plan on working on today, I may post later as an update as well.

On a side note, I recently stumbled onto a blog being posted by artist's Robin Cheers and Kate Merriman. It's titled The Artist's Way in 2010. I've been a fan of both of their blogs for some time now, and had heard about the book before, so I decided to order it. If not just to read along and see what they got from it. Instead I've ended up devouring the first pages and practicing a few of the given ideas to inspire creativity. This may have more or less to do with my multiple painting spree...but it's still a little early to tell.

Recently, I was featured in the Who Is....? column in a local arts and entertainment paper called The Weekender. It's weekly press informs the community about all things entertainment happening in the area. This is my attempt to "warm up" this morning. The sketch (which I've included below) is from summer vacation in OC, Maryland. I must admit that I don't open this book nearly as much as I should. Timing wise, the urge is to snap a photo and jump right into painting.
After my previous post about not finding my sketchbook inspiring, I felt the need to give it a second chance. Glad I did, as there is an endless amount of information to learn from these doodled lines. Taking the predetermined route of a photo is handy, but using your mind to place the colors, values, and in-between is a whole different ballgame.

In the future, I'd like to try and keep the brush on standby, and pick up the pen once in awhile.

Today was one of those days where hours passed by and I barely noticed. When I got to my studio this morning I poured a cup of coffee, sat down at the easel, turned on my iTunes and...well I don't know what exactly happened after that....but this was the result!

Thankfully, because I'd almost considered myself to be "blocked" after the holidays. Everything seemed uninspiring to me, as if with the turn of a calendar year all my previous ideas had gotten to old to bother with. I'd set up a few still lifes, just to knock them down and start over. Sketched for hours, which inevitably turned into scribbles of unlogical ink. I'm even awaiting the arrival of a few inspiring books I bought hoping to jump start the creativity machine again.

Today was different, and I believe it's because I stopped trying. I let go of the self pressuring, and just enjoyed the moment instead of trying to plan the next one. Now, tomorrow I'm sure I will try to recreate this whole day to no avail. At least I can count on the coffee...

She was admitted last night and was induced early this morning with no result, and taken back off the meds late this afternoon. It's been an off day, seemingly having to do everything twice to get it done right. I was able to pull this off without TOO much difficulty, although it needs to be rephotographed under better conditions. The amount of dark is highly reflective to any light source, and my patience is not high enough to mess with it tonight! The days till Christmas are quickly knocking off one by one, but I think this time I'll actually be ready. (Fingers crossed)

After working for so many hours, days, weeks on paintings for others I decided to do one for myself. Not directly for myself, as it's still been listed for sale. More so, one not commissioned or being given away as a gift, just something I can let loose on and enjoy regardless of outcome. (Which conveniently I like as well!) This took a morning cup of coffee and a relaxed afternoon of peace with my paints and brushes....and music as well! Hopefully I can pull off more like this after the "work" lessens up.

Just a side note for those of you who know I'm suffering through my first winter in years...I have never been so cold in my life! There has been snow, ice, wind, and chill for the last two weeks. The temps are dangling around mid-high 30s, not the mid-high 80s I became so accustomed to living in the South. I've been shopping for airline tickets to get me outta here and back into the sun, right after the holidays I will be taking a desperately needed vacation. (Yes, I'll take my paint and brushes and music with me...)

I've done alot of this myself lately, but not much has come of it yet! Hopefully by the time the new year rolls around there will be some progress to show for. In the meantime, I'll just keep painting and let my mind wander...

Last week I spent some down time shopping around an antique store looking for a few things to add to my growing junk pile of still life items. Tonight I finally got some time in the studio, aside from some current larger work I'm doing, to do this little setup. It was nice to work loosely and just get my brush going without nit picking over the details. There's nothing better to relax you than turning up the music and just pushing some paint around!

This was an old thing I had sitting around for awhile that I decided to finish while I'm waiting on some supplies to come in for some new work. Yes, I'm so far in the middle of no where I have to order everything, unless I drive pretty far to get to a decent art supply store!

This is part of a new series I've begun working out of my head, through my sketchbook and onto canvas. It has alot of twists and turns ahead but I am hopeing to get a good pull from this theme which I will explain and post later on....

I've been here the whole time, checking in on everyone else. Unfortunately for me, I've spent the last month on and off in sickness. Usually when I change climates I get ill for a week or two and then I'm over it. The change of season that I have not experienced in years has ultimately taken away the warmth and my immunity with it! Hopefully it has passed as this last week has been THE WORST. All the days in bed and well used delerium have got my head spinning with new ideas and a urge to get back into the studio and try a few things new and dust the shelves off the basics. Here's to a multivitamin and a dose of good luck! Thanks for sticking with me.

This is an enlargement of a painting a did awhile ago called "Scenic Route." Opposite the smaller 6x8 version, this has less detail and more atmosphere. Although it's not complete I like the look now, and will try to keep it as light as possible.
